Worked solutions in English

English worked solutions to four MEXT Specialized Training College mathematics papers. One PDF follows the intermediate calculations, domains, geometric conditions and answer-field order. Use it alongside the free official questions; it is not the undergraduate or KOSEN examination.

Open the 5-page sample

The free 5-page sample contains the actual cover and two complete major problems: 2016 problem 3 on recovering three equations from graphs and 2019 problem 2 on two right triangles, radii, a perpendicular distance and exact 15-degree values. Printed page numbers are retained. These are actual pages from the book. Select an image to read it at full size.

2016 Specialized Training College mathematics worked solutions recovering equations from graphs
Graphs to equations: vertex form, intercepts and factored form determine three different coefficient sets; the straight-line case permits a zero quadratic coefficient.
2019 Specialized Training College mathematics right-triangle radii and perpendicular-distance derivation
Geometry: two right triangles separate a circumradius, an inradius and a perpendicular distance before the numbered radical fields are filled.
2019 Specialized Training College mathematics exact sine and cosine of fifteen degrees
Exact trigonometry: the 15-degree angle comes from 45° − 30°; the sign change between sine and cosine is checked by normalization.

Included mathematics papers and topics

Included papers; printed page numbers refer to the named volume.
PaperTopicsPages
2016Inequalities, logarithms, counting, vectors, tangency lengths, scalar products and equations recovered from graphs2–10
2017Radicals, absolute values, repeated-digit permutations, progressions, monotonic cubics, right triangles and perpendicular lines11–19
2018Exact trigonometry, telescoping sums, integer restrictions, sequences, vector area, a cyclic quadrilateral and signs read from a parabola20–28
2019Absolute-value domains, nonnegative triples, circles, geometric progressions, median length, tangent-bounded area and graph matching29–37

All three major problems from each of the four public papers. The book retains the year, major-problem number and answer-field order while supplying its own derivations. Each year occupies a separate nine-page section of worked mathematics after the cover and contents. The 38-page total includes covers, reading notes and contents. Page ranges use the printed numbering within each volume.

Who this is for

Applicants practising the Mathematics paper in the MEXT Specialized Training College scholarship first screening. The book assumes upper-secondary algebra, geometry, trigonometry, probability, vectors and introductory differentiation and integration. Attempt the official paper first, then use the explanation to locate a missing condition, transformation or field value.

Not included

No Japanese or English language-test solutions, undergraduate or College of Technology papers, papers after 2019, question translations, personal tutoring or scholarship guarantee. Eligibility and application procedures can change; confirm them with the current guidelines and the Japanese embassy or consulate responsible for your application.

Three conditions that decide the answer

A transformed equation keeps its original domain

In 2016 problem 1(4), changing the logarithms to one base produces a quadratic with candidates 2 and 5. The original logarithms require x > 3, so only 5 survives. The explanation substitutes that value into the logarithmic equation instead of accepting every polynomial root.

The vertex order selects the fourth point

In 2018 problem 2, the perpendicular bisector meets the circumcircle at two points. Only one gives the boundary order A, B, C, D shown in the paper. Selecting it fixes the direction of the final vectors and gives the scalar product −3.

A squared placeholder asks for the radius

In 2019 problem 1(3), the diameter endpoints give centre (3, 4) and radius 5. Because the third printed answer field is already followed by a square, the entry is 5, not 25. Both endpoints are substituted into the resulting circle as a check.

What the current first screening requires

The 2027 application guidelines list Japanese, English and Mathematics as written academic examinations for all Specialized Training College applicants. Calculators and other devices may not be used. This product covers only Mathematics and does not replace the current guidelines, the language papers, application documents or the interview.

Classes at the specialized training college are normally conducted in Japanese, and application timing is handled by the Japanese diplomatic mission for the applicant’s country. Check the official application page for the current country-specific procedure instead of treating the years in this practice book as current application rules.

Choose the paper for your scholarship category

These papers are not shortened versions of the undergraduate or KOSEN examinations. For Social Sciences and Humanities, use the undergraduate Mathematics A book. For Natural Sciences A, use the undergraduate Mathematics B, Physics and Chemistry set. College of Technology applicants need the separate KOSEN set.

Free official questions, answer keys and current guidelines

Choose 2016, 2017, 2018 or 2019, then Specialized Training College Students and Mathematics on the official examination page. Do not substitute the Undergraduate Students or College of Technology Students papers. This book provides independent worked explanations; it does not republish the question statements or official answer tables.
